Characterisation of NO synthases from the alga Klebsormidium nitens
2022
Nitric oxide (NO) is an important cellular signaling molecule regulating various physiological processes, in both animals and plants. In animals, NO synthesis is mainly catalyzed by NO synthase (NOS) enzymes. In plants, NOS-like activities sensitive to mammalian NOS inhibitors have been measured, although no sequences encoding mammalian NOS have been found in land plants. Interestingly, we identified NOS-like sequences in about twenty algae species. These latter include the filamentous Charophyta green algae Klebsormidium nitens, a biological model to study the early transition step from aquatic algae to land plants. Currently, two NOS were identified in K. nitens genome: i) KnNOS1 which po…
Conceptual design and simulation of a water Cherenkov muon veto for the XENON1T experiment
2014
XENON is a direct detection dark matter project, consisting of a time projection chamber (TPC) that uses xenon in double phase as a sensitive detection medium. XENON100, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Italy, is one of the most sensitive experiments of its field. During the operation of XENON100, the design and construction of the next generation detector (of ton-scale mass) of the XENON project, XENON1T, is taking place. XENON1T is being installed at LNGS as well. It has the goal to reduce the background by two orders of magnitude compared to XENON100, aiming at a sensitivity of $2 \cdot 10^{-47} \mathrm{cm}^{\mathrm{2}}$ for a WIMP mass of 50 GeV/c$^{2}$. With…
Seeking the Source of Catalytic Efficiency of Lindane Dehydrochlorinase, LinA.
2020
Herein we present the results of an in-depth simulation study of LinA and its two variants. In our analysis, we combined the exploration of protein conformational dynamics with and without bound substrates (hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers) performed using molecular dynamics simulation followed by the extraction of the most frequently visited conformations and their characteristics with a detailed description of the interactions taking place in the active site between the respective HCH molecule and the first shell residues by using symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) calculations. A detailed investigation of the conformational space of LinA substates has been accompanied by desc…
A Hybrid Virtual-Augmented Serious Game to Improve Driving Safety Awareness
2018
The use of 3D virtual content and Augmented Reality (AR) in certain applications allows designing tools and serious games that are more attractive to the potential users. Focusing on the area of learning and education, these technologies can be adapted to the requirements of the application that needs to be developed, to the available devices on which they are expected to run and also to the learning content. However, in most applications only a single interaction paradigm and a single visualization mode is used, restricting the potential benefits of the system. In this paper, we propose a software application designed to improve driving safety awareness and learning for both adults and chi…
Experimental evaluation of topological-based fitness functions to detect complexes in PPI networks
2012
The detection of groups of proteins sharing common biological features is an important research issue, intensively investigated in the last few years, because of the insights it can give in understanding cell behavior. In this paper we present an extensive experimental evaluation campaign aiming at exploring the capability of Genetic Algorithms (GAs) to find clusters in protein-protein interaction networks, when different topological-based fitness functions are employed. A complete experimentation on the yeast protein-protein interaction network, along with a comparative evaluation of the effectiveness in detecting true complexes on the yeast and human networks, reveals GAs as a feasible an…
